ALCHOHOL DETECTOR

An alcohol detector, commonly known as a breathalyzer or breath analyzer, is a portable electronic device used to estimate a person’s Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) or Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) by analyzing a sample of exhaled breath.

How it Works

When a person drinks alcohol, it is absorbed into the bloodstream. As blood flows through the lungs, some of the volatile alcohol evaporates across the lung membranes into the air sacs. By exhaling deep lung air into the detector, the machine measures this vaporized alcohol and applies a standard conversion ratio (typically 1:2100) to estimate the user’s actual blood impairment level.

 

Types of Testing Modes

  • Active Testing: The user attaches a disposable mouthpiece and blows directly into the machine. This yields highly accurate, quantitative numerical values (e.g., %BAC or mg/L).
  • Passive Testing: The device samples ambient air or allows a user to blow near a funnel without a mouthpiece. This provides quick “Yes/No” or “Low/High” qualitative screenings, ideal for high-volume rapid checkpoints.

Key Technical Categories

  1. Semiconductor Sensors: Most affordable personal and portable models use these sensors. They are ultra-lightweight but can sometimes give false positives from non-alcohol substances like acetone (common in keto diets) or ambient fumes.
  2. Fuel Cell Sensors: Used by law enforcement, clinical settings, and premium testers. They rely on an electrochemical process that specifically oxidizes ethanol, ensuring highly precise readings that hold up in legal settings.
